People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) Unveils Ambitious AI-Focused Plans for Montserrat’s Future, Emphasizes Youth Opportunities
Brades, Montserrat, September 24th, 2024: The Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM)
Leader, Hon. Paul Lewis, has a visionary plan to position Montserrat at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) development within the Eastern Caribbean. This bold initiative is aimed at driving economic growth, boosting productivity, and creating a wealth of opportunities for the island’s youth.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) has the power to strengthen our economy, boost productivity, and create exciting new opportunities for every generation – especially for our young people,” Hon. Lewis stated. “The global race to scale up and adopt AI is on, and Montserrat is small enough to act swiftly and pilot initiatives that will place us ahead in this fast-growing field.”
Hon. Lewis shared that he has already initiated discussions with international AI experts to explore how Montserrat can become a significant player in the AI ecosystem. These conversations cover areas such as AI development, commercialization, and the responsible use of this technology. “We want Montserrat to be a key player in AI – in both its commercialization and safety. This will help secure good-paying jobs for generations of young people, keeping our island competitive in an evolving global landscape” he emphasized.
A new PDM administration would make substantial investments to accelerate the growth of the tech sector and create new job opportunities in AI and beyond. However, Hon. Lewis stressed that this progress will be handled with care: “Our approach will be responsible and future-focused. The AI sector is evolving rapidly, and we must ensure Montserrat embraces it in a way that protects our people while fostering sustainable growth.”
Youth development is a central theme in this AI-driven vision, with PDM candidate Mr. Jermaine Wade, expressing excitement about the possibilities AI presents for Montserrat’s future. “AI is the future, and I believe this is a massive opportunity for Montserrat’s youth,” Mr. Wade said. “By investing in AI, we are not only giving oiur young people access to the latest global trends, but we are also preparing them to lead the future right here on our island.”
Mr. Wade stressed the importance of equipping Montserrat's youth with the tools they need to thrive in the technology-driven world: "Our young people deserve the chance to be at the cutting edge of these advancements. Through education and exposure to AI and technology, we can secure a future where they don’t just participate but lead in these industries. I am excited about the possibilities for our youth – this is their moment.
Hon. Lewis also reaffirmed PDM’s long-term economic strategy centered on securing Montserrat’s future. “Our goal is simple: create good-paying opportunities for every generation, raise productivity, and strengthen our economy. We will make generational investments in our education system to engage our young people in technology and AI, starting from pre-secondary school level,” Lewis added.
